At a recent conference in Perth introducing and discussing the new English translation of the Mass a bishop was quoted as saying

"I used to see myself as a moderate churchman, and now I find myself on the left- but I haven't changed".

His perception is accurate. There are an increasing number of people around the traps (in Australia at least) that have been passing themselves off as 'middle ground' Catholics for as long as they can remember who suddenly find themselves stranded on the left as the Church swings back towards centre after so many years leaning left.

Heads up Australian Catholics.

No matter how many times I see it, this one always makes me laugh.

I thought it was just my paranoia that it all seemed to be originating with Associated Press, but it seems more obvious every day that they have an agenda here.

What annoys me most about the angry responses are the extreme versions of both ends of the spectrum.

NO this is NOT just a beat up to hurt the Pope.

I cant help referring to this clever piece on the Australian government's plans to introduce an Internet filter. It draws on the wisdom of Sir Humphrey Appleby of Yes Minister fame, and his theory on the motives underlying political action. He suggests that the basic political syllogism is as follows,

1. We must do something

2. This is something

3. Therefore we must do this.

This is a placeholder for a post on Lily Allen's latest album.

I was glad to see an article by Melinda Tankard Reist on Lady Gaga's latest music video clip published in The Australian newspaper about a month back. As always her clips are high production, clever use of symbolism combined with a number of young women engaged in very slick choreographed dance routines wearing next to nothing.

I am poking my head out of a self imposed blogging break because this news is too big to ignore.

From the homepage of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles,

Pope Benedict XVI has names Archbishop Jose H. Gomez of San Antonio, Texas, as Coadjutor Archbishop of Los Angeles. ... As Coadjutor, Archbishop Gomez (58) will automatically become head of the three-county Archdiocese of Los Angeles upon Cardinal Roger Mahoney's retirement at age 75 on February, 27, 2011.

Married with eight children, I read for work and recreation which results in the current combination of G.K. Chesterton, Orson Scott Card and Terry Pratchet in my backpack. I'm not always certain which is work and which is recreation!
