The Jesuits have elected a new leader, and the Pope has approved their selection. Fr. Adolfo Nicolas, 71, moderator of the Jesuit provinces of East Asia and Oceania, will become the 29th successor to St Ignatius as head of the worldwide order.

To ask a question coined by a well known heretic "What does this mean for us?" (vas ist das?) To be honest I have no idea. I went immediately to my friendly ignatiophile and found only further links. The reports of Fr Adolfo's elevation carry the usual congratulatory tone and sanitised bio of those who are anxious to be seen to cast a hopeful light on the new situation, but little substantive evidence of anything more than same-old same-old.

Yet another protest which oversteps the boundaries and goes wrong, leading to the protesters loudly demanding their 'rights' be observed. This time two anti-whaling protester boarded a Whaling vessel without permission and generally created a scene with their stunt of delivering a demand that the whaling stop.

Let me be clear about the issue: I think the Japanese whaling is a disgrace.

David Schütz has raised the curly question of Christ's real presence being 'physical' or not in a post where he cites Richard John Neuhaus as saying that the Christs' real presence is "more than physical". In his own words,

Theologians of an orthodox persuasion sometimes say that the Real Presence does not mean physical presence. This is to guard against the debased notion of a cannibalistic consumption of a portion of human flesh and blood.

A friend reminded me about this video clip by Nick Canon which is the best contemporary song on this topic I've yet seen. I love that it presents the issue positively, and from the point of view of the singer himself, with respect for the difficulty of the situations people find themselves in. I wish all teenagers could see it.

See for yourself.

Later in 2008 I will be teaching a 12 hour unit on "The Genius of Man" which is supposed to be a complimentary unit to the late JPII's now famous concept "The Genius of Woman". Catholic women, and women everywhere have grown comfortable talking about the unique nature and role of women and their invaluable contribution to marriage, family, society and Church but there has not been the same attention on men.

Children provide many priceless lines and acts which make me laugh on a regular basis but one of the funniest things that happened this summer involved them only peripherally.

We frequented a small family beach, which was regularly full of retired couples and families with small children. The waves are small, the water reasonably safe and most of the silliness of other beaches is absent

Into this context walked 2 middle aged men.

One of the key critiques of the modern embrace of contraceptives by the Catholic Church is that it separates the unitive aspect of sexual intimacy from the procreative. Separating one from the other, specifically choosing one to the exclusion of the other is, at the very least, a misunderstanding of the full significance of sexual intimacy.

After a long break from the computer I am back to the regular work/home grindstone for 2008. So many things to Blog about and so little opportunity over the break.

Married with eight children, I read for work and recreation which results in the current combination of G.K. Chesterton, Orson Scott Card and Terry Pratchet in my backpack. I'm not always certain which is work and which is recreation!
